Nurse staffing

Nurse staffing is an important part of any medical facility’s efficiency. Without the appropriate nurse staffing, a hospital cannot operate the way it is set up to run. Nurse staffing is vital for top-notch quality patient care in the healthcare system.

Nurse staffing at a hospital never ends. Nurse staffing must occur around the clock, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. This is necessary to take care of patients who must be hospitalized overnight and for long periods of time. All floors and most departments of a hospital require nurse staffing.

The nurse staffing requirements are different depending on the type of patients that are being cared for. For example, a higher nurse to patient ratio is required in critical care units (CCU), intensive care units (ICU), and pediatric and newborn units (NICU). These areas are generally where the sickest patients are.

Because of the high demand for nursing care and shortage of nurses, nurse staffing is often less than it should be for optimum patient care. This often causes nurses with all types of degrees, RNs and LPNs included, to work a lot of overtime and extended hours.

There are job placement companies that help hospitals with the shortages they have in nurse staffing. They help to recruit nurses for short term and long term positions where they are needed. Some of these companies may hire traveling nurses to come in for a period of time to help with a nurse staffing issue so that patient care is not compromised.
